Originally incorporated as Sunrise Golf Village, the city of Sunrise was started when developer Norman Johnson purchased 2,650 acres, in 1960, with plans to build a community. To entice people to move to the community, Johnson and F.E. Dykstra built the “upside-down” house. The house soon drew many curious visitors to the area and became a national sensation, as it was featured in magazines throughout the country. The promotion worked and many people relocated to the area.
The name was ultimately changed to Sunrise in 1971 and the city began to grow as Broward County continued its westward development trek. By the mid-1980s, the city had over 50,000 residents. Although Sunrise struggled financially in the 1980s, it was able to establish itself as a center for business by the 1990s, constructing the Sawgrass International Corporate Park and leasing office space to many companies. Expansion continued as the Sawgrass Mills mall opened, as well as the BB&T center, which hosts hockey games, concerts, and other entertainment events.
The city has a residential side as well, with many communities consisting of single-family homes, condominiums, and townhouses. It has an extensive park and recreation program, offering soccer, football, and softball leagues for children. For adults, there are golf courses, tennis courts, and an athletic club.
Sunrise has a population of 91,177 people and the average age of its residents is 38.6 years old. The population is almost evenly racially diverse as 33.2% of its residents being African American, 32.5% white, and 28.4% Hispanic. The median income is $50,297 and median property values of $150,800. Residents living in Sunrise commute an average of 26.9 minutes to work.
